Helping the Welsh Government Meet their Carbon Reduction Target.

In the fight against climate change, SPIE UK is committed to helping its clients reduce their carbon footprint and meet their sustainability targets. That is why we are proud to be rolling out 12 new Ford Transit Custom hybrid vehicles across our portfolio of Welsh Government tunnel projects which will allow us to operate more sustainably in these rural locations where the EV charging infrastructure is still too limited for fully electric vehicles.

SPIE UK has worked for the Welsh Government for more than 30 years, with the A55 Conwy Tunnel refurbishment being our first project in 1989. This long-standing relationship is testament to our quality of delivery and continuously meeting the client’s needs, particularly in terms of budget and timescales – ensuring minimal disruption to road users. Most recently we secured a 5-year maintenance contract, which led to us opening a regional office with a dedicated local team on hand to monitor and maintain the tunnels in and around the area.

The climate crisis has remained high on the agenda at our one-to-one meetings with the client, where we discuss the pipeline of works and innovations we can offer, focusing on how we can reduce energy consumption through LED lighting or renewable energy and energy-efficient solutions.

There is no doubt that the introduction of these Ford Transit Custom hybrid vans will certainly make a difference to the client’s carbon output when the SPIE team travels within the local vicinity of North Wales.

Steve Henry, Operations Manager for SPIE said: “This is a great opportunity to help the Welsh Government meet their carbon reduction targets and in turn the UK Government’s 2050 net zero target. The global climate crisis is something we take very seriously as a business, which is why we need to always keep our finger on the pulse.

With the Welsh Government, we’ll provide innovative solutions, particularly in respect to energy savings, and the roll out of these hybrid vehicles is just one example, having already delivered 50% energy reduction from many LED lighting solutions across the client’s portfolio. Furthermore, when it comes to signage, CCTV and sensors, we monitor power usage and select more energy-efficient technology wherever possible to reduce energy consumption and in turn the client’s carbon footprint.”

Geraint Jones, Tunnel & Technology Unit Manager, from the North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency, added: “We have worked with SPIE for many years and have always been impressed with their forward-thinking approach, expertise and quality of delivery. SPIE has always understood the vital role we play and the vast responsibilities we have across the region, which includes the transport infrastructure.

Ensuring the safety and accessibility of road users is our number one priority, but also mitigating the impact it has on the environment is key. That is why the rollout of these hybrid vans are an important aspect when it comes to working towards meeting our carbon emissions reduction targets and creating a more sustainable future.”
