Digital transformation has led to tremendous growth in the data centre market. While this is very positive, there is one unfortunate issue that cannot be avoided: the vast increase in the quantity of energy needed to power these facilities to ensure they remain operational.
By the time we reach 2020, world data centre energy use is set to reach nearly 5% of all consumption and will be over 10% by 2050. Data centre organisations have recognised this issue, and new energy reduction solutions are being developed to help with energy reduction. SPIE's Peter Westwood explores some of these new energy reduction solutions.
