The need for greater sustainability is feeding an explosion in smart technology in buildings. However, this introduces the hurdle of coping with an ever-growing data stream.

Smart buildings are not a new concept. In his book, Connected Real Estate published in 2007, Kevin O’Donnell discusses in detail the concept and strategies. What is more recent is the globally acknowledged climate emergency, which establishes targets for net-zero carbon.

With environmental and health goals driving people into action, the technology market as it relates to smart buildings is anticipated to observe dramatic growth in the use of new remediating controls and data acquisition products, inspired by the recent introduction of BIM Level 3 funding, and the potential to create connectivity through Internet of Things instrumentation.
