The Conwy Tunnel on the A55 North Wales Coast Road was the first immersed tube tunnel in the UK. It is 1,090 metres long and starts at Llandudno Junction on the east bank of the River Conwy, emerging on the west bank, completely bypassing the medieval town of Conwy.
The installation of the tunnel was carried out under an extremely short programme of just 23 weeks, which required a highly co-ordinated approach to the planning and implementation of the various activities.
SPIE’s contract involved the management, design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of all the electrical and mechanical services required for the tunnel, the tunnel service building and water pumping stations.
