Smithills Hall Museum

Upgrade and refurbishment of the 14th Century, Grade I listed, Smithills Hall in Bolton.

SPIE UK was appointed by Bolton Council as Principal Contractor for the upgrade and refurbishment works to Smithills Hall museum, a Grade I listed Manor House in Bolton which dates back to the 14th Century.

This 12-week contract included specialist internal, external and conservation works to sympathetically refurbish and upgrade areas that date back hundreds of years. A great testament to SPIE’s expertise and experience in the heritage sector having collaborated with the customer’s architect, building users and local community to ensure that the history of the building remained perfectly preserved.

Smithalls Hall

The internal works comprised the restoration of the ornamental parquet flooring, oak paneling and ornamental ceilings to their Victorian glory. In addition, SPIE oversaw the replacement of fittings to restore the heritage significance of the internal spaces and was involved with external works, such as roof and chimney repairs, as well as specialist repairs to timber windows and external lime render. Also responsible for the creation of a new reception counter, new staff welfare area and public snack areas, SPIE demonstrated its engineering ingenuity and excellence with heritage sites.

It was an honor to be chosen to preserve the building's rich history and to prepare it for a new generation of visitors who can explore its halls and enjoy the unique architecture it offers.
