Manchester Airport Tunnels

LED lighting upgrade for the A538 Manchester Airport Tunnels.

SPIE UK was awarded an LED lighting upgrade contract for the A538 Manchester Airport Tunnels, which serve runways 1 and 2.

This 20-week contract, worth in excess of £2.6 million, was part of a planned refurbishment scheme alongside Galliford Try Plc, the construction and regeneration group.

The A538 is a key road link providing access to Manchester Airport, the third busiest airport in the UK, therefore, a key challenge was to keep traffic disruption to a minimum. SPIE’s expert teams created a bespoke solution, undertaking the work in 24hr shift patterns within the planned programme of road closures.

With an enviable reputation for knowledge, experience and expertise in the field of tunnel lighting having completed similar works in the last 5 years to the highest quality with exceptional results, SPIE demonstrated unrivalled tunnel refurbishment excellence through the delivery of innovative, cost-effective and energy-efficient tunnel lighting solutions to secure this contract.

Having teamed up once again with established LED lighting manufacturer Philips Lighting, SPIE installed state-of-the-are LED lighting technology. The energy-efficient, low maintenance, compliant and controllable tunnel lighting system is set to significantly reduce the energy consumption and running costs compared to the previous installation.
