Small but perfectly formed

Sandown, Isle of Wight, Wastewater Treatment Works

Requirement

A new wastewater treatment works and sludge recycling centre was built at Sandown on the Isle of Wight as part of the Sandown Joint Venture, an unincorporated collaboration between Brown & Root and Aker Kvaerner (now part of Skanska).

Southern Water, who awarded the contract to construct the new plant, commissioned SPIE as the project’s electrical and mechanical contractor.

Solution

SPIE installed:

The design verification, supply, installation and configuring of the electrical and instrumentation works on the new primary and secondary treatment works, including the installation of switchboards, containment, cabling, equipment and building services.

The digestion plant, gas storage and power generation equipment including ATEX installations.

Results

Built on a disused solids waste disposal site, the size of the site necessitated a compact design, resulting in one of the smallest wastewater treatment works in the Southern Water region.
